81 TiN - Titanium Nitride This is the most widely used coating. Due to the low capacity of titanium nitride to react to ferrous materials, the tool wear due to cold welding is decisively reduced TiCN - Titanium Carbon Nitride Readily supplements the TiN coating due to its higher coating hardness CrN - Chrome Nitride Enables even thicker layers to be deposited at a relatively high hardness in conjunction with low brittleness TiAIN - Titnium Aluminium Chromium Nitride This is chosen for the most arduous conditions of use due to the high hardness and oxidation resistance AlCrN - Aluminium Chromium (ALCRONA) Nitride A universal extreme wear resistant coating with excellent hot hardness and thermal shock stability. Superb results in dry and wet machining at high cutting speeds. DLC - Diamond like Carbon Coating Extremely hard, highly wear and corrosion resistant for best sliding properties. Vital for injection systems and anywhere where seizing up and cold welding must be prevented. Coating Material Microhardness (HV 0.05) Friction Coefficient against Steel (Dry) Max. service Temperature (°C) Coating Colour 2,300 600 gold-yellow 1100 light-grey 3,000 400 blue-grey 0,4 1,750 0,5 700 silver-grey 2,500 0,5 350 black-grey 3,300 0,30-0,35 900 violet-grey 3,200 0,35 Benefits of Recommended Coatings • Longer service life and higher press stroke rates • Decreased down time to replace parts • Prevention of cold welding • Less lubricants, thus making them more environmentally friendly • Minimises friction thus requiring less stripping pressure In order to meet the ever increasing requirements imposed on the tools in metal forming, the tool life can be substantially increased by different coating methods, depending on the parent material and the intended use. Tool steels, M2 and ASP materials, the annealing temperatures of which are above 500°C, may be treated with the following coating systems by the PVD method (physical vapour deposition.)
